Horticultural Supervisor
Job Description
To oversee the management of prisoners within your department, to include ensuring that interviewing employment and accurate payment is carried out.
To ensure that all work under your control is completed with regard to the security of the establishment, Health & Safety at Work legislation & financial propriety demonstrating best practice at all times.
To adopt a standard of conduct, manner and bearing that will encourage prisoners to make a positive response to prison treatment.
You must ensure that all personal protective equipment required to carry out your duties, is used in the correct manner, stored correctly and if damaged or unsuitable for any reason is replaced.
To carry out any additional tasks set out by your Line Manager.
To maintain a high level of productivity at all times within your area of responsibility.
Ensure compliance with all Prison Service Orders so correct procedures are followed for the area in which you are employed
To ensure that both national and local policies on Race Relation and Equal Opportunities are conformed with at all times.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Skills & Qualifications Applicants will have either completed a recognised apprenticeship in their trade or attained NVQ level 3 or above and have relevant experience. Essential Horticultural Qualification The post requires the candidate to work within a prison and therefore must be able to pass a CRB Enhanced level check PA1/PA6 Certifications Desireable NVQ Assessors award A1/V1 Excellent Horticultural Plant and Tree knowledge Worked within a prison regime before (Farms Manager, Farms Foreman, Industrial Officer, IG Grade 2/3) Excellent organisational skills Positive attitude to the rehabilitation of offenders |

Duties to Include (but not restricted to):
* To take an active role in the implementation of all business planning for the following areas, annually, monthly and weekly
* Farms and gardens
* Market gardens
* Conservation and biodiversity
* To supervise staff within the environmental services provision
* To actively support and enable staff to achieve their SPDR expectations through effective working practice.
* Assist staff in the management of prisoners
* Ensure all prisoners are attending and recorded on PNOMIS for correct wages and regime monitoring
* To assist in maintaining a clean and ordered working environment
* To maximise opportunities to reduce costs
* To be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all machinery
* Be familiar and comply with prison service orders and instructions and all relevant risk assessments
* Ensuring prisoners have clear and adequate instructions of what is required of them
* Ensuring all prisoners are given thorough induction and are fully trained before they are allowed to operate any tools and machinery
* Ensuring that all prisoners are employed in line with the business planning and assist them in working towards accreditation and or qualifications in land based, horticulture and recycling
* All prisoner training records are updated correctly
* All prisoner movement within the work environment to be monitored
